Fannie Johnson Obituary, MERIDIAN, Miss. — Fannie Johnson, a former Meridian City Councilwoman, U.S. Army veteran, and longtime public leader, has lost her life, prompting an outpouring of condolences from city and county leaders and members of the community she served for more than four decades.
Johnson was widely recognized for her extensive service to Meridian, including her longtime leadership of L.O.V.E.’s Kitchen, an organization that has supplied meals to local residents experiencing hardships and homelessness for more than 40 years. Her work with the organization made her a prominent figure in efforts to support vulnerable individuals of the public.
In addition to her work at L.O.V.E.’s Kitchen, Johnson served as a member of the Meridian City Council. Her contributions to the city were recognized in 2017 when she was named Meridian’s Citizen of the Year, an honor reflecting her longstanding commitment to public service and the public.
Meridian Mayor Percy Bland expressed the city’s grief over Johnson’s passing, describing her as the heart of Meridian and a dedicated servant leader. Bland highlighted her work representing residents at City Hall and her efforts to ensure that people in the public had access to food through L.O.V.E.’s Kitchen.
Johnson’s death is currently the subject of an active inquiry involving the Meridian Police Department, state law enforcement agencies, and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Authorities have verified that one suspect is in custody, although the suspect’s identity has not yet been released.
Investigators have also not released the cause of Johnson’s passing or the specific location where the incident transpired. Assistant Police Chief Dareall Thompson said investigators have worked relentlessly since the incident and confirmed that the joint inquiry with the ATF remains ongoing.
Law enforcement are expected to provide additional information as it becomes appropriate to release. The investigation remains active, and spokespeople have indicated that law enforcement will proceed working to establish the circumstances surrounding Johnson’s loss and pursue justice.
